A series of 11 rare film clips of events in India and Pakistan between 1931, when Gandhi visited Italy, to November, 1947, when fighting overcame Kashmir. The clips were featured monthly on this site in 1998-99. There are scenes of Colombo, Sri Lanka [once Ceylon] and army recruiting in Punjab in 1942, World War II events that had lasting effects on India's political development. The opening of the Sukkur Barrage in Sindh in 1941 transformed a province and led to the growth of urban Karachi. Other clips show the Princes in London in 1931, Gandhi and Jinnah in Bombay in 1944, and Nehru in Kashmir in 1947.
