A current list of books on early photography in India.

The Last Empire. Photography in British India, 1855-1911, by Ainslie Embree and Clark Worswick (Aperture Books, Millerton, New York, 1976). The first and essential book on early photography in the subcontinent, with an excellent selection of photographs.

History of Photography India 1840-1980, by G. Thomas (Andhra Pradesh State Akademi of Photography, 1981). An introduction by one of the pioneering Indian figures in the field. Still available in India.

Through Indian Eyes, by Judith Mara Gutman. Countless beautiful photographs, the nucleus of the Center for Photography as an Art Form collection at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Bombay. Much of the research has been superseded.

Princely India. Photographs by Raja Deen Dayal 1884-1910, by Clark Worswick (Alfred Knopf, New York, 1980). A collection and study of one of the finest 19th century Indian photographers.

Samuel Bourne. Images of India, by Arthur Ollman (The Friends of Photography, Carmel, California, 1983). A slim volume with an informative introductory essay and the best reproductions of Bourne photographs. Still available.

Victorian India in Focus, by Ray Desmond (India Office Library and Records, London, 1983). An interesting collection, marred by the low quality of photographic reproductions.

Bombay. The City Within, by Sharada Dwivedi and Rahul Mehrotra (India Book House, Bombay, 1995). A new and superb look at Bombay's history from 1650 until today through every type of visual media, particularly photographs and postcards.

Madras - Its Past & Its Present. Text S. Muthiah, Photographs Vintage Vignettes Collection and D. Krishnan and G. Vijayan (Affiliated East-West Press Private Limited, New Delhi, Madras, Bangalore, Hyderabad, 1995). A look at the city old (on glass) and new with descriptions of places and their changes.

Lahore. Illustrated Views of the 19th Century, by F.S. Aijazuddin (Grantha Corporation, New Jersey, Mapin Publishing, Ahmedabad, Vanguard Books, Lahore, 1991). Another extensive look at a single city through visual time, by a Pakistani expert and collector.

Soldiers of the Raj The Indian Army 1600-1947 by Alan J. Guy and Peter B. Boyden (National Army Museum, London, 1997). Lavishly illustrated with photographs and numerous historical essays.
