A most incongruous piece of film, this newsreel shows Gandhi receiving the fascist salute and reviewing cadets during a visit to Rome, Italy in December 1931. He was on the way home from the Roundtable Conference in London, and planned to see the Pope - who, however, had no time for the simply dressed Mahatma.

The original soundtrack of this Universal Newspaper Newsreel has been lost. The words of Gandhi are from a speech given in Delhi on April 2, 1947 when he was 78:

"The West today is despairing of the multiplication of atom bombs because a multiplication of atom bombs means the utter destruction not merely of the West, but it will be a destruction of the world, as if the prophecy of the Bible is going to be fulfilled and there is to be a perfect deluge."
